OXNARD, Calif. - Oxnard's new charging station for high-end Tesla electric cars recently opened at The Collection shopping center off Highway 101.
The facility is the 200th so-called Supercharger station and fills a gap between Los Angeles and Buellton. The stations allow fast, free charges for Tesla Motors Inc. vehicles, which can cost more than $100,000.
Oxnard's open-air Supercharger has room for up to 10 cars at a time. As with other stations in the company's expanding network, the retail setting provides drivers with a place to eat, have coffee or shop while they fuel up. Partial charges are possible in 20 minutes, the company says, with a full charge possible in 90 minutes or less. A fully equipped model can go more than 200 miles between charges.
On Thursday evening, local Tesla drivers Pirouz Ahoura and Sean Collinson chatted eagerly over the details of their rides as they refueled. Both said they stopped by because of the station's superfast charging capability.
The Superchargers only work with Tesla cars, but Oxnard's deal with the automaker called for installation of four charging stations for non-Tesla cars. Volta Industries will install two behind the Yard House and two on the south side of Whole Foods.
