Dunn waiting: Longtime trustee chosen as board prez for first time

Freshly elected member the swing vote
By Becca Whitnall

IN CHARGE—Mike Dunn moves into the president’s seat.
BECCA WHITNALL/Acorn Newspapers IN CHARGE—Mike Dunn moves into the president’s seat. BECCA WHITNALL/Acorn NewspapersLong a thorn in the side of the Conejo Valley Unified School District establishment, Mike Dunn was selected Tuesday as president of the board of education, a role he’s never filled during his 12 years in office.
The term is for one year.
Dunn, 64, has had the reputation of a conservative lone wolf for his willingness to stand alone on an issue when faced with opposition from four like-minded board members. So when time came each December to select a president, a responsibility that’s traditionally cycled among trustees, Dunn never received the three votes necessary to get his hands on the gavel.
That all changed Dec. 6.
With the support of newly sworn-in trustee Sandee Everett—the top vote-getter in the recent election—and first-term board member John Andersen, Dunn won the seat 3-2, with trustees Betsy Connolly and Pat Phelps voting against. The selection was met with applause from some in the audience.
“I just want to go in there and humbly get the job done,” Dunn told the Acorn.
He said his term would be “basically a co-presidency” with Andersen, who was voted in as board vice president.
“One of my top priorities is United Cerebral Palsy,” Dunn said, referring to a possible displacement of the organization’s day program located on the adult school campus in Waverly Heights.
But the first-time president has another goal in mind as well.
“My top priority is to stay out of controversy,” he said. “I want to fly under the radar, be receptive to the concerns of the community and get the job done.”
