- In layman's terms, lets destroy something that works.#1 hkahn11731 points
- This is a crucial issue and should be used as a litmus test for democrats running for office at any level. Either you support increasing the power of workers or the employers. Simple as that.#2 Tony Baloney27 points
- The "Gig Economy" is a BS ripoff, period. People working for a company where the company pretends it has no liability for or responsibility towards the employees is one of the biggest lies ever.desertroadNewcomer
And while we're at it, could we please throw all the "Responsibility to intervene" politicians in to the ocean? San Diego is well situated for that.Actually, the only lie I see here is your assertion that "pretends it has no liability or responsibility" towards drivers. - Yet another case of CA Leftwing government trying to destroy something that is actually good for society, to cater to powerful interests. It's probably no coincidence that this representative is from San Diego, the same area where the corrupt State Senator Ben Hueso, who was pushing anti-Uber/Lyft legislation while his family owns taxi monopolies in SD. In fact it's a virtual certainty that he put her up to this (to obfuscate the connection).Dr. AzinNewcomer
Uber and Lyft are certainly NOT employers. Drivers can choose if/when or not to work with either of them at any time.
They have been a game changer for users, providing affordable transportation when it was previously unavailable or cost-prohibitive.
They have enabled people to comfortably live in California without owning a car, reducing traffic, parking congestion, and environmental damage.
They have empowered people who were unable to find a job to earn money, provide for themselves and families, and restore their dignity.
They have allowed entrepreneurs to build new companies, while driving to support themselves during the startup phases of their businesses.
They have drastically reduced the incidence of DUI by providing a convenient, low cost alternative to driving after even one or two drinks (where taxis have failed miserably).
Lets hope that whatever smidgeon of intelligence exists in our CA government prevails here, and this kooky bill never sees the light of day.Wow, you *really* hit the nail on the head! Kudos. The drivers meet every criterion I know of for independent contractors, own equipment, set their own hours, quit whenever they want.
It is illegal for independent contractors to collude to set prices, so unions? meh?
And every legitimate business I know of pays their contractors by check.I disagree. Drivers are clearly working for uber or lyft when they drive for them. They have branded cars and I believe the paychecks come from the companies. If they were independent then you should be able to hand cash to the driver. That is clearly not the case. You can disagree all you want, but the reality is that Uber and Lyft drivers are already validly classified as contractors. Look no further than taxis for proof: way back in 1983, the D.C. Circuit overturned an NLRB ruling that stated taxi drivers were unambiguously correctly classified as such. - First liberals hailed Uber as a low cost alternate to the expensive taxi's with their questionable business practices (so-called). Then about 3 uber employees (out of thousands) started complaining about their income, fast forward and now they have lawmakers trying to help the employees unionize. This will increase costs and lower service-value...basic putting them right alongside Taxi's. Liberalism at its finiest.John BeckwithNewcomer
- Why do you think California is a mess? It has one of the best economies in the nation and world. It's also made significant improvements in environmental conditions. I've seen the smog pictures from the 70s. Unions are good. Germany has very powerful unions and they are also doing well.
- Breaking laws and raping passengers works for Uber? I wonder how long will this scam last.
- Uber is cheap....customers are even worse....just stop driving, it's not worth it.Lakers805NewcomerIf it wasn't worth it, they wouldn't be doing it.
- cats are as productive as most union members....
- Democrats have found a business they cannot tax, so they are trying to find a way to tax it. You get a union, the union sends political money to the Democrats, and the Democrats scratch the back of the union by sponsoring onorous legislation -- unless the company "does right" by the union. To see how this works, look no further than the teachers unions, which are really nothing more than fundraising appendices of the Democratic Party.unclesmrgolMember

Simple as that.Tony BaloneyNewcomerOh, please. Lemme guess: you have no idea that nearly all of American taxi drivers work as contractors, not employees, as well, and have been doing so for 30+ years. Or that they treat, and pay, their drivers far less than Uber or Lyft.Naw, it's the litmus test for those who were actually awake during Econ and those who weren't.....
- Again, left wing California legislators are going to try as hard as they possibly can to screw up a good thing. Why can't they just keep their ugly noses out of legitimate business?pscott5NewcomerThey are Democrats and screwing things up is what they do Scott.
