Amri is the 23-year-old Tunisian refugee suspected of hijacking a truck from its Polish driver, Lukasz Urban, and driving it into a Christmas market crowd at Breitscheidplatz in Berlin-Charlottenburg, Germany. 12 people were killed and 48 others were injured in the suspected Islamic State attack, which was later confirmed in a media release by ISIS.

After the attack, Amri fled to Paris and Chambéry before taking a train to Turin, then Milan. According to the Associated Press, French authorities are declining to comment on how Amri, the subject of an international manhunt, was able to enter France and leave again.

Amri was killed at 3 a.m. this morning in a shootout with police after arriving by train in Sesto San Giovanni, north of central Milan. According to the New York Times, Amri was asked to show his identification papers but instead pulled out a pistol. He was then shot and killed by police.

The UK Daily Mail reports that German authorities were already following Amri prior to the the Berlin Christmas market attack. “He had already been under investigation for planning a ‘serious act of violence against the state’ and counter-terrorism officials last exchanged information about him in November,” the news site said.

According to The New York Post, “Amri had been arrested in the southern town of Friedrichshafen in August with forged documents en route to Italy but was released by a judge.” His phone was being monitored.

According to The Star, Amri had applied for German asylum but was rejected. However, he wasn’t deported because he lacked identification papers. They add, “His father described him as a violent drinker and drug user who was radicalised in a European prison.”
